Tooth Extraction
You and Dr. Godfrey may determine that you need a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Some teeth are extracted because they are severely decayed; others may have advanced periodontal disease, or have broken in a way that cannot be repaired. Other teeth may need removal because they are poorly positioned in the mouth (such as impacted teeth), or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.
The removal of a single tooth can lead to problems related to your chewing ability, problems with your jaw joint, and shifting teeth, which can have a major impact on your dental health.
To avoid these complications, in most cases, Dr. Godfrey will discuss alternatives to extractions as well as replacement of the extracted tooth.
Types of Extraction
There are two types of tooth extraction: simple extraction and surgical extraction. Simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible and easy to remove, while surgical extraction is a more complex procedure that is required for teeth that have not fully erupted, are impacted, or have broken below the gum line.
Preparing for Tooth Extraction
- Dental examination: Before the procedure, the dentist will conduct a thorough dental examination to determine the best approach for the tooth extraction.
- Medical history: Patients are required to disclose their medical history to their dentist, including any medications they are currently taking, allergies, and any medical conditions that may affect the procedure.
